Google tracks where you are going, what you are buying, the music you’re listening to and more. If that does not creep you out, I am not sure what will. Don’t get me wrong, having the suggestions based off my recent activity makes it easier to browse or research the internet. And yes, Google Maps did save me a few times, when I was looking for directions to a place I frequently visited in the past. It was like, Google Maps read my mind. It knew exactly where I was trying to go, and how long it will take to get there.
The part freaked me out was, I did not enter the address. I was driving in the direction I usually take and It just popped up on my phone screen. It wasn’t until I started shopping on my phone that I realized my searches and purchases where everywhere. When I shop on my phone and the last pair of shoes I purchased is being advertised on every page, enough is enough. Please tell me I am not the only one that feels like my privacy is no longer mine.
For those of you who are thinking the same, I have great news. You can control the tracking Google does in 3 easy steps. If you are for this I trade my privacy for the no hassle , and recognize the value in the ads and tracking your activity, you can also follow these steps to set your settings to track specific activities.
1. Type MyAccount.Google.com in your favorite browser. You may need to sign into Google with your username and password.
2. Under “Data & personalization,” click “Ads settings” (under Ad personalization) to display the Ads Settings page, which shows a list of your interests from your activity on Google sites, such as what you watch on YouTube.
3. If don't want personalized ads, turn off Ad Personalization.
Once you've turned off personalization, Google will no longer use your info to personalize your ads. Ads can still be targeted with info like your general location or the content of the website you’re visiting. Ads will now be displayed based on your settings.
